Hemoglobin (Hb) is found in red blood cells and is the protein that carries oxygen from the lungs throughout the body. When glucose is present in the bloodstream, a proportion of hemoglobin will become coated with this sugar (glycated). Once hemoglobin is glycated, it stays that way until the blood cell dies, which takes about 3 months.
The HbA1c test is a measure of the person’s average level of glycated hemoglobin over the past few months. Also called an A1c test, it is used to diagnose, monitor and manage diabetes.
Traditionally measured in percent (but now reported by labs in mmol/mol), a person without diabetes would typically have a level below 5.7 %. A person with a high chance of developing diabetes would be indicated by a range of 5.7 – 6.4 %. This is commonly known as pre-diabetes. A reading of 6.5 % or higher would indicate an individual is suffering from diabetes.
